Â鶹Éç sports teams to host record number of playoff games this week

MONTREAL - It will go down as the busiest playoff week in Â鶹Éç sporting history this week as the University could be hosting as many as eight playoff games in a six-day span.

While the women's volleyball team is headed for the CIS national championship tournament, for the first time in 15 years, in Hamilton, Ont., March 2-4, both of the Redmen and Martlet hockey teams are in the midst of playoffs, as well as both basketball squads. Never before has the University had five teams in the playoffs at the same time.

In women's basketball, top-seeded Â鶹Éç defeated the Université du Québec à Montréal 63-56 in a sudden-death semifinal, Tuesday. ÌýIn the other semifinal, the Stingers rallied from an early 24-7 deficit to defeat visiting Bishop's 65-53. The Martlets will host No.2-seeded Concordia in the RSEQ league championship game on Friday at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the national championship. The loser will qualify for a CIS regional tournament in Saskatoon. Â鶹Éç and Concordia split their four games this season with the Stingers outscoring the Martlets by a slight 237-232 margin.

In men's basketball, the Quebec sudden-death semifinals open on Wednesday. Fourth-seeded Laval plays at top-seeded Concordia in one series, while UQAM travels to No.2-seed Â鶹Éç for the other semi. Both games are slated to tip-off at 7 pm. The Redmen won three of four confrontations with UQAM this season, outscoring the Citadins 237-218. The winner of this series will meet the winner of the Laval-Concordia semifinal in the league championship game, Saturday at 7 p.m.

In women's hockey, the RSEQ league championship series, begins on Wednesday with the No.2-ranked Â鶹Éç Martlets opening the best-of-three affair on the road against the Montreal Carabins at Stade CEPSUM in a 7 p.m. start. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at Â鶹Éç's McConnell Area at 7 p.m. If a deciding game is needed, it will also be at McConnell on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Â鶹Éç won four of five regular season meetings, outscoring the Carabins 25-6.

In men's hockey, No.2-ranked Â鶹Éç will renew rivalries with an old foe Wednesday, when they host No.8 Trois-Rivières in Game 1 of the OUA East conference best-of-three final series at McConnell Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.

The teams will be hooking up for the 17th time in the post-season. UQTR has won 11 of the 16 previous playoff series but Â鶹Éç has won each of the last five series against the Pats. UQTR (19-7-2), which finished second to Â鶹Éç (22-4-2) in the standings, won two of three meetings with the Redmen this season, with Â鶹Éç holding an 11-10 margin in goals.

Game 2 of the series is slated for Saturday night in Trois-Rivières (7:10 p.m.) and if a rubber match is needed, it will be back at McConnell Arena on Sunday at 7 p.m.
