How ever\, since the mid-2000s\, there has been a rapid expansion of transnati onal and domestic investment in economic tree plantations under a diversit y of different governance regimes across the region. This is being driven by a combination of: a) government desires to promote economic development and ‘turn land into capital’\, b) national legal frameworks that encourag e foreign and domestic investment\, discourage traditional agricultural pr actices and override customary resource rights\, c) transnational companie s seeking ‘idle’ land and labour for capital ventures\, and d) local desir es to improve incomes and become “up to date”.  The expansion of commercia l tree crops is resulting in rapid transformation of the livelihoods and l andscapes of forest-dwelling communities\, who both resist and are complic it in this transition. Within the broader context of Southeast Asia\, this presentation will focus on the impact of Chinese transnational investment s in plantation agriculture in Northern Laos and how this is transforming the forest landscapes and livelihoods of ethnic minorities.
