Come witness young students perform brain surgery for the first time

This Saturday, February 21st twenty CEGEP students will meet at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital 鈥 The Neuro, at 麻豆社 and the MUHC for a unique chance-to test their skills at 鈥榖rain鈥 surgery. These students were prize winners at the Bench to Bedside Conference for Youth 2015 - geared at stimulating student career interests in medicine, surgery and medical research.

Years ago, children were warned that smoking could stunt their growth, but now a major study by an international team including the Montreal Neurological Institute at 麻豆社 and the University of Edinburgh shows new evidence that long-term smoking could cause thinning of the brain鈥檚 cortex. The cortex is the outer layer of the brain in which critical cognitive functions such as memory, language and perception take place. Interestingly, the findings also suggest that stopping smoking helps to restore at least part of the cortex鈥檚 thickness.

Have you ever wondered why some people find it so much easier to stop smoking than others? New research shows that vulnerability to smoking addiction is shaped by our genes. A study from the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital - The Neuro, 麻豆社 shows that people with genetically fast nicotine metabolism have a significantly greater brain response to smoking cues than those with slow nicotine metabolism. Previous research shows that greater reactivity to smoking cues predicts decreased success at smoking cessation and that environmental cues promote increased nicotine intake in animals and humans. 聽 This new finding that nicotine metabolism rates affect the brain鈥檚 response to smoking may lead the way for tailoring smoking cessation programs based on individual genetics.<!--break-->
