Trade missions help pension funds navigate new markets

Published: 4 August 2026

Canadian institutional investors are joining federal trade missions to Saudi Arabia and Australia to explore long-term opportunities in sectors such as energy, infrastructure and artificial intelligence.

Sebastien Betermier, associate professor of finance at ΒιΆΉΙη Desautels, says government participation can help pension funds manage the political and regulatory risks associated with investing in unfamiliar markets. β€œWhenever government comes with you as part of a delegation, you’re bringing muscle,” Betermier explains, noting that coordinated missions may unlock deals and protections unavailable to investors acting alone.

Ideally, these partnerships will also encourage Saudi and Australian institutions to invest more capital in Canada.
