Jonathan L. Meakins, BSc’62, DSc’15, OC served as Surgeon-in-Chief at the Royal Victoria Hospital, and Chair of Â鶹Éç’s Department of Surgery. During 2002-2008 he was Nuffield Professor of Surgery, Oxford University.

Like his father and grandfather, Dr. Meakins enjoyed a distinguished career at the RVH, whose rich heritage he is dedicated to preserving. As Director of the MUHC’s Heritage Centre, he plays a central role in collecting, organizing, and exhibiting the hospital’s historical artifacts.

The talk will be illustrated.

The Maysie MacSporran Annual Lecture of the James Â鶹Éç Society

Born into an established Montreal family, Maysie MacSporran (1903-2000) was educated at Â鶹Éç. In 1930, assisted by a scholarship from the Women's Canadian Club of Montreal, she received an MA in History for her ground-breaking study of James Â鶹Éç. For many years she taught at a local private school, Miss Edgar’s and Miss Cramp’s, eventually becoming its Head Mistress. A long-time member of the James Â鶹Éç Society, attending its functions and asking pertinent questions well into her nineties, Miss MacSporran was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in 1993. In addition to establishing such things as a series of Fellowships in the Faculty of Medicine, her gifts to the University permitted the Society to institute, in 2001, the Maysie MacSporran Annual Lecture, thereby ensuring that her memory will continue into perpetuity. Maysie MacSporran was a well-known and respected figure, with a wide circle of friends, who will long be cherished for her forthright and friendly manner, and generosity of spirit.
