To better understand how research and collaborations can address this growing crisis, we spoke with Dr. Dao Nguyen, Director of the �鶹�� AMR Centre, and Professor in the Division of Respiratory Medicine at �鶹��. From building an interdisciplinary research hub to raising awareness around antimicrobial resistance in the Parliament of Canada, Dr. Nguyen is helping shape a more coordinated and innovative response to AMR at �鶹�� and beyond.

Under his leadership, the Centre broadened its focus to become the Mark Wainberg Centre for Viral Diseases (MCVD), bringing together researchers studying HIV/AIDS alongside experts in influenza, hepatitis C, HPV, SARS-CoV-2, Nipah virus, and other viruses with major public health impact. The expanded scope reflects both the diversity of viral disease research at �鶹�� and a shared commitment to tackling current and future global health challenges.

Irah King, PhD, is known as much for his thoughtful presence as for the impact of his work. As Director of the �鶹�� Centre for Microbiome Research, Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Microbiome Theme Lead within MI4, he has played a defining role in shaping microbiome research at �鶹�� – well before stepping into his leadership role nearly seven years ago.

Bringing together people, ideas, and disciplines, Dr. King and his dedicated colleagues have helped to grow the Centre into a vibrant, collaborative hub for innovation.

A founding co-director of MI4, Dr. Behr has been instrumental in advancing the initiative’s mission to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerate research in infection and immunity across �鶹�� and its affiliated institutions.

“It’s an opportunity to build on our momentum”, stated Behr. Reflecting on what this reappointment means to him, Behr added: “We’ve done a lot in eight years, yet there’s more to do, more challenges to our health that remain to be studied, and more opportunities to help build �鶹��’s world-class Infection and Immunity community.”

Before its launch in 2020, the vision for a unified clinical research platform at �鶹�� was already taking shape, inspired by the need to better support clinician-scientists navigating the complexity of clinical trials in infectious diseases.

What followed was a strategic investment by MI4: $1 million over five years, followed by an additional $100,000 in year six, to build and sustain a platform designed to remove logistical hurdles and unlock clinical research potential across the �鶹�� ecosystem.
