Since joining the Schulich School of Music as an Assistant Professor in 2023, Jack Kelly (Ph.D. ’23, M.Mus. ’16) has drawn on his extensive skills as a researcher and working audio engineer to create an invigorating and encouraging environment for his students in Sound Recording and Music Technology.

Dr. Ben Duiker (MMus'09, MA'11, PhD'20) is a Montreal-based music researcher, percussionist, educator, and choral singer with a PhD in Music Theory and an MMus in Percussion Performance from the Schulich School of Music (SSoM). He is currently a postdoctoral researcher with the ACTOR (Analysis, Creation, and Teaching of Orchestration) Project.

Kalen Smith (MMus, BMus ‘23) is a harpist and composer at the Schulich School of Music. His piece, Distant Paths, was written as a composer-in-residence and was premiered by the Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME) on December 4, 2024 (read the concert review here). As the title suggests, the work juxtaposes tonality and atonality, movement and stasis, weaving a vivid tapestry of textures and colours.

What can you do with a degree in music education? A lot, it turns out. Sean Mayes earned his undergraduate degrees in music and education at �鶹�� in 2013. And since then, he has taken on projects in Montreal, Toronto, and New York City that both amplify marginalized voices and tell amazing stories, all while sticking to his core values as an educator.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, Schulich’s first Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Coordinator was hired. This position was created as part of the ongoing work that the School is doing towards addressing inequities and discrimination.

Queer feminist soprano and alumna Ariadne Lih (MMus’21) began as EDI Coordinator this past March. Living within the intersection of her love for performance and her passion for equality and representation in music, she has embraced the role with open arms.

Music students and recent graduates Elissa Nakhleh (BMus’22, Piano Performance) and Nour Saba (BA’22, Honours Psychology with a minor in Music Composition) invite the community to experience traditional Arabic music performed by Arabic youth and a traditional Arabic band. Through a project they developed, and with the support of Schulich’s Community Engagement Program, these two young women are providing a place and space for youth to strengthen their Arabic roots and connect with each other through music.
