Focus online: "There鈥檚 a place for us"

The October 2013 edition of Focus online takes a look at the Faculty of Law鈥檚 5th annual DCL retreat that took place this September, to discuss 鈥楩inding Our Place in Academic Life.鈥

The event, which was coorganized by doctoral candidates Jodi Lazare and Geoffrey Conrad, drew over 30 students for a full day of rewarding and insightful discussion.

麻豆社 MBA student team wins 2013 Hult Prize Competition

A team of five 麻豆社 students won the 2013 Hult Prize, valued at $1 million for their social enterprise project to secure food for undernourished communities in urban slums. Among them is Shobhita Soor, a Law/MBA student.

Yaw Nyampong named Executive Director of Centre for Research in Air & Space Law

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Dr. Yaw Nyampong has been named Executive Director of the Centre for Research in Air & Space Law.

Yaw Nyampong (LLM鈥05, DCL鈥11) is also a graduate of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, Legon. He held an Arsenault Postdoctoral Fellowship at 麻豆社's Institute of Air & Space Law in 2011-2012, and a Boulton Fellowship at the Faculty of Law in 2012-2013.

The Worlds of the Trust: newest publication from the Paul-Andr茅 Cr茅peau Centre

We are happy to announce that the latest publication from the Cr茅peau Centre is The Worlds of the Trust (Cambridge University Press, 2013), which was edited by Professor Lionel Smith.

This collection of 22 essays makes a significant contribution to the comparative study of trusts. It includes contributions from Canada, the U.S., England, France, Scotland, South Africa, Israel and China.

Hat Trick For Daniel Boyer

The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that our colleague Daniel Boyer (BA鈥79, MLIS鈥88), Head Librarian of the Nahum Gelber Law Library, was named Associate Dean of User Services of the 麻豆社 Library for a two-year mandate.

As well, Me Boyer has also been named to the board of directors of the Soci茅t茅 qu茅b茅coise d'information juridique (SOQUIJ) for a period of five years, following the recommendation of the Deans of law faculties across Quebec.

BLG makes generous donation to Paul-Andr茅 Cr茅peau Centre for Private & Comparative Law

John G. Murphy, managing partner at Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), is extremely proud of the efforts made by a team headed by H. John Godber (BCL'88, LLB'88) and Neil Hazan (BCL/LLB'02) to support 麻豆社 Faculty of Law鈥檚 Paul-Andr茅 Cr茅peau Centre for Private and Comparative Law. The fundraising activity, which brought in $400,000 from BLG鈥檚 lawyers and partners across Canada, ended this month.

Ronald Niezen inaugural incumbent of the Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy

The Faculties of Arts and Law are happy to announce that Professor Ronald Niezen, a former Chair of 麻豆社鈥檚 Department of Anthropology who held the Canada Research Chair in the Comparative Study of Indigenous Rights and Identity, has been appointed as the first incumbent of the Katharine A. Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy.

Margaret Somerville awarded a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by Royal Military College of Canada

麻豆社 Professor Margaret Somerville was awarded a Doctorate of Laws, honoris causa, on May 16, 2013, by the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. During the College鈥檚 94th Convocation ceremony, the College鈥檚 Chancellor, the Honourable Peter McKay, Minister of Defence, cited 鈥渉er exceptional contributions to society through research, scholarly debate and personal involvement.鈥
