MURA 11th Annual General Meeting

Sixty-five members and guests attended the 2026 Annual General Meeting, where they learned about the significant developments within MURA over the past year, voted on special matters, and welcomed the new members of the MURA Board and Executive.
Keynote speaker delivered an insightful presentation on聽Why Tibet Matters, which sparked a lively and engaging discussion. The event concluded with a reception, highlighted by a toast from new Executive member Eyal Baruch celebrating MURA鈥檚 11th anniversary and its continued growth and success.
Both long-standing and new members enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect and build new relationships.
MURA Walking Tours of the Latin Quarter Neighbourhood
June 12 & 16, 2026, 10:30 a.m.
The Quartier Latin, at the eastern edge of downtown next to the Village, was built as an upscale francophone residential district along Saint-Denis Street 鈥� yet it has always been right next to vulnerable populations and social service institutions. Its name, borrowed from the Quartier Latin in Paris, dates from the early 20th century when it was home to Universit茅 de Montr茅al, which later moved to the mountain campus. After a 30-year hiatus, higher education returned in the 1970s with UQAM and the C茅gep du Vieux-Montr茅al. Today the Quartier Latin forms the eastern end of the Quartier des Spectacles and is known for its bars, restaurants and caf茅s, as well as for arts and culture: notably the Grande Biblioth猫que, the Cin茅math猫que qu茅b茅coise and the Th茅芒tre Saint-Denis.
About a dozen members attended each tour followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant.
Kim Bartlett -聽My Dance With Parkinson's

On May 13, 2026, Kim Bartlett presented a heartfelt and inspiring virtual presentation where she shared her personal experience of living with Parkinson鈥檚 disease鈥攁nd how movement has become a powerful tool for coping, resilience, and everyday well-being.
Kim Bartlett was diagnosed with Parkinson鈥檚 in 2009. Thanks to dance classes and support from family and friends, she continued working full-time as Director of 麻豆社 at 麻豆社 until 2019. Now 鈥渞etired鈥�, Kim continues to dance, socialize, study and enjoy her grandkids. She has enjoyed dance since the age of聽5. Kim continues to enjoy as participant and president of the non-profit organization, Parkinson en mouvement.
Luncheon/Lecture

Twenty-five members gathered for the MURA Luncheon at the beautiful Tadja Hall on the Macdonald Campus. Attendees enjoyed a delicious meal followed by an engaging and highly informative presentation by Maureen Rose, B.Sc., M.Ed., Ph.D., titled聽鈥淟ess Calories but More Nutrients: The Nutrition Dilemma as We Age.鈥� The event also provided a welcome opportunity for many Macdonald retirees to reconnect and catch up with former colleagues.
Virtual presentation by Sam Watts, Welcome Hall Mission CEO

MURA hosted a virtual insightful presentation by Sam Watts on the Welcome Hall Mission () that was attended by 26 people. We gained valuable insights into the vital mission of WHM and a deeper understanding of the challenges WHM organization faces in addressing homelessness in Montreal.
WHM is doing a remarkable job trying to combat homelessness, mental health issues, and hunger in our city. It鈥檚 clear why its expertise is in high demand in other communities.
Its program has set the example and standard to a more supportive and inclusive plan for mental health and homelessness issues.
WHM Also has been the rock for many people in our community with its food support and back to school programs and the wonderful Christmas event. WHM Is also closely connected to 麻豆社 through the faculties of Medicine and Dentistry. It has inspired our MURA Cares project to participate as volunteers and this team is growing.
We wish Sam and WHM all the best as you continue to advocate for WHM's mission among our local and provincial leaders. Congratulations to Sam on his book, Good Work Done Better!
