July 10, 2026 |听Pearl Eliadis听joined Montreal Now with Aaron Rand to unpack a Quebec court ruling on the 12-month mandatory minimum for possession of child sexual abuse material. The court struck down the sentence in the case of a defendant with the cognitive capacity of a child between eight and eleven years old. Eliadis notes the ruling follows a 2025 Supreme Court of Canada decision on the same section of the Criminal Code, and argues that judges need room to weigh individual circumstances because "surely we don't want a one size fits all justice system."
