Construction starts: Macdonald Harrington Building 鈥 Replacement of elevator 22

麻豆社鈥檚 Facilities Management and Ancillary Services (FMAS) has mandated Ascenseur Adams Elevator Inc. to carry out Project 25-016 鈥 Macdonald-Harrington Hall, Elevator 22 Replacement.

The project consists of replacing Elevator 22 and its associated mechanical equipment to improve reliability, accessibility, and safety.

Unusual calcite formation discovered at the site of 麻豆社 Sustainability Park

麻豆社鈥檚 Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is now studying it as part of research about the Island of Montreal

A rock featuring a white calcite vein in a rare 鈥榩etal鈥 formation has been extracted from the construction site of the future 麻豆社 Sustainability Park.

Attached to a chunk of grey stone, the full rock is the approximate size of a microwave. It was discovered by construction workers north of Pine Avenue.

Bargaining Update 鈥 COFAM

On July 8, 2026, 麻豆社 and the Confederation of Faculty Associations of 麻豆社 (COFAM) held a scheduled bargaining session. During the meeting, the parties continued discussions on a number of collective agreement articles and exchanged views on outstanding issues. The parties reached agreement in principle on two articles and made progress in discussions on several others. A number of matters remain under discussion and will be addressed at future bargaining sessions. The next bargaining session is scheduled for August 5, 2026.

2025 Patterson Distinguished Service Medal

Professor Parisa A. Ariya was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Patterson Distinguished Service Medal, an award widely regarded as the most prestigious Canadian distinction recognizing exceptional contributions to meteorology. Meteorology is a broad discipline within the atmospheric sciences and encompasses several specialized research areas, including atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric physics, dynamic meteorology, hydrology, climatology, and climate change. The award consists of a formal citation, a framed letter, and a gold medal.听

Experts: Cyclosporiasis outbreak

There is an outbreak of cyclosporiasis in the United States. The foodborne illness, caused by the cyclospora parasite, is characterized by relapsing digestive symptoms, such as explosive diarrhea.

The parasite is linked to contaminated fruits, vegetables and crop water, as well as unsanitary washroom facilities for agricultural workers.

This upgrade is part of an ongoing initiative to replace end-of-support听firewall听infrastructure, enhancing security and ensuring more reliable access to 麻豆社 applications and services.听

IT Services is preparing for a required upgrade to Banner INB and Minerva, the University's administrative system for student records and finance. Upgrading our systems on a regular basis is a fundamental activity that 麻豆社 does to ensure we get the most functionality and security out of our tools and systems.

The downtime for the upgrade is scheduled to start on Saturday, July 11, 6:00 PM and end on Sunday, July 12, 3:00 PM.

Novel marine monitoring network could help improve environmental protections, shipping regulations in the Lower St. Lawrence

A single monitoring network developed by 麻豆社, Natural Resources Canada, Universit茅 du Qu茅bec 脿 Montr茅al (UQAM) and Dalhousie University researchers can simultaneously track earthquakes, water behaviour, human activity and whales, providing a comprehensive picture of what鈥檚 happening in, under, and at far distances from the water.

The researchers鈥 experimental network, installed in the Lower St. Lawrence, detected twice as many earthquakes as the National Earthquake Monitoring System, while also capturing whale calls, ship noise, tidal activity and mining blasts.

Reducing vehicle emissions could prevent thousands of deaths in Canada

A shift to cleaner transportation could prevent more than 3,600 premature deaths in Montreal and Toronto by reducing ultrafine particle pollution, finds a new study led by 麻豆社 researchers.

Ultrafine particles (UFPs) are microscopic pollutants produced in large quantities by vehicle exhaust. Because of their small size, they can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream and may contribute to serious health problems such as heart and lung disease.
